Dodged a bullet

January 11th, 2008

A few months ago before I accepted my new (and current) job at Crystal Dynamics, I interviewed with a number of other studios that were interested in my services. One of those was Spacetime Studios, a new startup located outside Austin, Texas. They were working on a Massively Multiplayer Online Sci-fi game for Korean based publisher NCSoft. I was really excited about this prospect, but after a couple of sucessful phone interviews I stopped hearing from the company. It wasn’t until after I accepted the job at Crystal that I heard back from them asking if I would be willing to fly out and check out the organization. I politely declined and explained the situation, and I figured that was it.

Fast forward to this afternoon and I notice an article online about Spacetime Studios. It turns out NCSoft pulled the plug on their game, the two companies have parted ways, and Spacetime is going to have to lay off a dozen or so employees. Wow. For awhile I wondered if I made the right decision accepting the position at Crystal, and whether or not I should have waited for the Spacetime face-to-face interview. Well now I know, and according to a particular Saturday morning cartoon, knowing is atleast 50% of the conflict.
