Concerning Nitrobikes.

January 20th, 2008

(for those of you who didn’t see the earlier post, Nitrobike is a game that I worked on while I was still at Left Field Productions, that was recently released for the Nintendo Wii)

Nitrobike is an oddity for me for one simple reason: I designed the logo.Early in production on the game, the higher up’s in the company wanted to shop a demo around to a number of different publishers, so that the game would get purchased and we could all continue to receive paychecks. In order to do that we had to put together a number of things in addition to the demo including a trailer video, a one sheet with facts about the game, and a logo.

At the time, we all assumed “Nitrobike” would be a temporary title, and that whichever Publisher picked up the game would change the name and work up all their own branding. As such, I was told to work on a temporary logo for the temporary title. I took a couple of days and designed about 16 different comps and variations, and then had the entire company vote on them. Once we had a logo that we all liked, it was used in all the promotional materials, and worked into various places in the game.

When Ubisoft decided to buy the game, much to my surprise, they kept the name. Even more surprising to me was the fact that they kept the logo. Suddenly my logo was being used in press releases to video game news sites, on promotional videos, in the layout for the Nitrobike game cover. It was really weird. And now that the game has been released, there it is, my logo on store shelves. For whatever reason, this is a very odd sensation.
