Third Period Religion comics
If I remember correctly, I started working on this comic about two years ago. I only finished the three strips before I gave it up. I am the king of unfinished web comics.
The idea, originally, was to focus on a kid named Max Cooper who’s parents had caught him with a joint and decided to ship him off to Catholic school. Looking back the idea was very “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” although I really didn’t think of it that way at the time. Mostly because Fresh Prince was all about a ‘wacky’ guy in this all-together normal(ish) environment. Will Smith was craaaaaazy!
The pitch with “Third Period Religion”, as I intended to call it, was to show how craaaaaaazy this school would appear to an outsider. That is where the name came from actually, the idea of having a ‘religion class’ would seem strange had I not grown up with it. Being forced to go to a weekly Mass, uniforms, Catholic School GIRLS! Comic gold people, I’m telling you! Also most of the characters were loosely based on friends of mine, so they could “be in the comic” without me having to force in guest appearances that made no sense to the story.
The art is a bit painful now. This was my first attempt to illustrate a comic completely in photoshop with just the Wacom tablet, everything up to this point had been drawn on paper and scanned in. I would love to revisit this someday, as I still have a ton of backstory and sketch work already completed. It is that ’someday’ word that gets me into trouble.
