Comic Con International 2006!

Well I just dropped Tim and Molly off at the airport, and let me tell you, it's been quite a weekend. The Comic Con was pretty crazy. There is where all the nerds in the Northern Hemisphere come to meet and debate which of the 27 Star Wars graphic novels is the best. There are of course comic nerds there by the handful, but also Star Wars nerds, Star Trek nerds, Sword and Sorcery nerds, Film Geeks, TV dorks, cosplay freaks, video game addicts, table top gaming rejects, the meeting place of the great unwashed. And it was wonderful.

The San Diego convention center is huge. The show floor opened at 10:00. We got there around 10:15 or so and the lines were incredibly long and also very unorganized. Three seperate employees gave us three seperate answers about which city block sized line we should be in. Somehow, because of this confusion, Molly, Tim and I got in a tiny 20 person line for what turned out to be the post office. It did, however, get us inside and up to the registration area without waiting in any real lines. Score! We probably saved an hour of waiting in the 97 degree heat by having no idea what was going on.

One of the first things we saw after the registration area was a huge gathering of Star Wars fans in costume. There must have been over two dozen storm troopers in this one area alone.

When you think of comics, you think of...the Wayans Brothers? They were giving a talk in one of the auditoriums that we stumbled into to see the "Greg the Bunny" talk that was up next. Suprisingly enough, they were amazingly cool with their fans, and very, very funny. Marlon's rant about the horrible Dungeons and Dragons movie he was in had us rolling on the floor.

From the "Greg the Bunny talk" which featured the very funny Seth Green, the show creators, and the actual Greg and Warren puppets. We had two idiot fanboys sitting next to us shouting out to try impress the panel, but we had the advantage of being about four rows away from the love of Molly's life. They also screened clips from the upcoming IFC Greg the Bunny DVD which looks to be hilarious.

Cosplayers. We have Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, a gamecube, and the ice climbers.

Ah! Giant Mario!

Ah! Giant Boondocks!

Ah! Giant Batman made entirely of legos.

Ah! Giant girl I went to High School with who later became a tv and movie star.

Some very cool Alex Ross artwork from the Spiderman movies. I really want the J. Jonah Jameson one.

My swag from the show including three Daredevil trades, a new signed Frank Cho sketchbook, and a signed Penny Arcade book.

The Penny Arcade guys' signatures. They were very cool, and we talked a little WOW before their other rabid fans needed to be attended to.

And finally a tattoo I got in San Diego. Alright it was a temporary tattoo from the Square/Enix booth. Blah!

Other highlights of the show include meeting Patten Oswald randomly on the show floor and being five feet away from Princess Leia herself, Carrie Fisher. Im sure I'll remember more later, but this is probably more than enough for the moment.

Hulktastic!

I thought I'd post this HUlk Illustration I worked up. I've been trying to get all my Illustration work together so I can put together a small portfolio to take to Comic Con this year. Really I dont expect anything to come of it, but you never know. One of the guys I work with, the company's concept artist, has a booth at the con and is going to introduce me to a few people. Anyway, I'm currently busy cleaning the house for the arrival of Tim and Molly, so Im going to cut this short and just post the image.

Hopefully next week, pictures from San Diego.

Superman I am not.

So to be honest, I really didnt understand the concept of long hours until I started working for a video game company. 70 hour weeks have become common. Its 11:57 here in Southern California and Ive been home all off 15 minutes. I am tired, but I figured I should atleast try and get a little new art up for y'all. I finished this Superman illustration a few weeks back for a drawing jam on one of the bulletin boards I frequent. It is the first time I've been really happy with the way a Superman illustration has turned out, so that's something. Here it is.

Next week is Comic Con, my friends and time off of work. I am very excited. Goodnight all and I'll try to have more for you in a couple of days.
